Hello Seoul!

We arrived in Seoul!

What do you do when you’re jetlagged on day 1 of your 85-day trip? You start it in style and go straight to the spa, where you can recover from an 11-hour sleepless flight and nap off some of the jetlag. That’s exactly what we did.

Rather than running around like zombies in the streets of Seoul, we decided to start this trip in a way that’s right up our alley. While most of the other visitors were busy getting the perfect selfie or vibing to the k-pop music we were on the hunt for the perfect nap location. After some relaxation time we took a dip in various temperature waters. The 41°C onsen-like pool was definitely our favourite and a very welcome foreshadowing of our favourite country to come. 100% worth it.

Funny enough, these first few hours felt more like we’d landed in Vegas or walked straight into the Mall of Dubai. The spa was part of the Paradise City resort, which is… quite an unexpected introduction to Korea.

There was also a giant pumpkin in the lobby. Another potential foreshadowing, as the sculpture from Yayoi Kusama, an artist we will likely be seeing more of over the next few months.

After our little Vegas excursion, we hopped on a bus from Incheon Airport and arrived at our home base for the next week. It’s nested right in the middle of Seochon, an old, authentic part of town. The 100-year-old walls definitely add to the authenticity, particularly through their complete lack of soundproofing. Everything is small and quaint. Steve is definitely outside of the normal size distribution here, as demonstrated by a few head bumps and the fact that the shoes don’t fit in our designated shoe box.

First culinary experiences were also made. We’ve already had our second taste of traditional tteokbokki (rice cake). I think it’s fair to say we’re fans. First Korean BBQ can also be checked off the list!

Jetlag even allowed for a first stroll through the rainy, authentic streets around our Hanok stay. Time to unpack some non-existent low-light photography skills.

It’s a funny feeling knowing that our life will be so drastically different for the next few months, and it’s definitely starting to hit us. We are so grateful for the opportunity and even more so that we get to experience all of this together
